It’d sounded simple enough.
The town had requested an alliance with the neighbouring tribe of dragons. A mutually beneficial arrangement for all involved, or so Terra had been told. The dragons had requested a “fine young man” be sent, to take part in the ritual that would serve as the basis for their agreed arrangement. And the town complied, sending a nobleborn Terra was distantly acquainted with to liase with the dragons own chosen dignitary.
He was returned to the town a few short hours after he left. Unconcious but completely unharmed, at the bottom of the steps leading to the sacred meeting grounds. When he eventually awoke, he sheepishly admitted...he’d fainted at the sight of the dragon that had appeared.
Appalled, the town council quickly sent another. He too returned a few short hours later, irritated and empty handed. Spouting that the dragon had rejected his attempts and sent him away. Flustered, the town sent one more young man. Only for the result to repeat yet again. The only difference now being that the returning individual had been left some parting words by the dragon.
‘I will only align with a compassionate heart’
Terra had thought that was a little vague when he’d heard it. But the town council had deliberated the words at length. And eventually decided that Terra was the next young man they’d send to meet the dragon.
So here he was...climbing the winding steps with the councils pleas fresh in his ears. “Please make this work, Terra” they’d begged. Right, no pressure at all.
He followed the pathway and found it lead to a crack in a great rock wall. After a moments pause he entered. When he finally exited the narrow crevice, Terra slowed to a stop, finding himself in an large and enclosed, rounded hollow. The stone walls of the hollow are covered with a pretty assortment of moss and ivy, their green tones blending into the open, clear sky overhead. Terra finds the space pretty, soothing even. Concealed and protected from anything outside in spite of the view of the sky.
However Terra can see no dragon.
And part of him wonders in that moment if she’d been so dissapointed in the towns offerings she’d departed back to her own tribe in disgust. Still, he takes a deep breath and walks forward to near the centre of the clearing in the hollows middle. He doesn’t mind waiting. He really hopes she hasn’t returned to whence she came though...
