Waves Beneath my Wings

“I’ll be fine,”
She’d said in assurance, before spreading her wings and taking flight. Terra was going to investigate whisperings of trouble on the edges of the territories. Though even if words hadn’t reached her ears she would’ve travelled there regardless. She could feel a sharp prickling under her skin, a sign a threat was looming near her home. Near the people she was duty bound to protect.
The Harpy had expected Monsters. And she’d found them… though what Terra hadn’t anticipated what their numbers…
Their horrid, unnatural howls and the eerie glow of their unnatural eyes filled her senses as she rose to fight them.
~
Did her wings really carry her so far?
Her legs ached in solid affirmation while the wounds peppering her back and shoulders throbbed with every step she took. Terra lost track of how many she’d taken, of how many times the sun had passed overhead as she limped her way home. Exhaustion was pulling at every part of her...the thought of shutting her eyes was oh so tempting.
No
Terra was nothing if not determined, especially because she knew there was someone waiting for her to return.
Aqua…
Terra blinked. A familiar stairway swimming into view. Leading to the Keepers Rest. So close now, she could-would make it… what were a few more painful steps now? The Harpy limped slowly. And soon crested the top of the pathway, a comforting sight, that of lights within the house sitting just beyond filled her eyes.
Then she staggered. Her broad shoulders connected with a decorative lantern lining the pathway, the unfortunate item pitching over under her weight with a far reaching clatter. Terra wasn’t one to scream, but. She couldn’t help the warbling cry that escaped her as the motion pulled at her already painful injuries.
She hit the dirt, barely clinging to consciousness, but forcing herself to do so.
Aqua, Aqua, Aqua-!
